Three years after declaring the internet ‘over’, the Purple One posts his first selfie to Twitter and links to new music

Prince has finally embraced the digital era by sending out a string of meme-oriented tweets.
Kicking off his own Twitter stream yesterday with a vintage image of himself and the words “hi im prince”, the Purple One proceeded to upload his very first selfie, which turned out to be a few wisps of smoke. Another early tweet included a photograph of a salad with the caption “DID EYE ADD 2 MUCH PEPPER?”
Using the Twitter handle @3rdeyegirl, the singer has since promoted the video for his new single, Groovy Potential, which now appears on the 3rd Eye Girl YouTube account. It is also available to purchase from his website.
This flurry of online activity is an odd turn of events considering Prince’s past anti-internet campaigns. Back in April he issued a takedown request to Twitter’s Vine app for any of the service’s six-second video clips that use his music, and previously he said he intended to file lawsuits against eBay, YouTube and the Pirate Bay for the misuse of his music. Speaking to the Mirror back in 2010, Prince said: “The internet is completely over. I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else.”
Prince’s Twitter account was verified by a representative for Twitter Music.
